Aquarium of the Pacific

Long Beach, California

Role: Sub-consultant to HOK
Completed: 1998

The Aquarium of the Pacific is located on a five-acre site in Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor in close adjacency to the famed Queen Mary hotel and attraction, Long Beach Convention Center and Shoreline Village. It sees 1.5 million visitors a year and has a total staff of more than 300 employees and about 650 volunteers. In addition to the galleries and marine exhibits, the facility also hosts many cultural events throughout the year.

The building’s architecture is inspired by the towering, breaking waves of the Pacific Ocean and mirrors the fluid and dynamic temper of those waters. The sign program uses curved, etched glass and indirect lighting to emulate the architectural program. The sign system includes you-are-here maps, directional, identification and code-required sign types.
