Kaiser Permanente San Diego

San Diego, California

Role: Sub-Consultant to CO Architects
Completed: In Progress

Background
With 528,000 local members, Kaiser is one of the San Diego region’s largest health providers. In early 2014, Kaiser broke ground on its second hospital in the San Diego region. This new medical center, located in Kearny Mesa, has a projected opening in early 2017 and a price tag of about $900 million. The project is targeting LEED gold certification. The 560,000 sf, 8-level hospital will have 321 beds when it opens, with the ability to add 129 more as demand dictates. The campus includes a 60,000 sf, 2-story medical office building, a 38,000, 3-story central utility plant, and a 1,470-stall, 7-level parking structure. The 19-acre site will include gardens and a half-mile walking trail for visitors, patients and staff.

SKA Scope
SKA Design is tasked with developing the identification and wayfinding signage for the interior of all buildings, as well as building exterior and site. Because of the Project Team’s goal of incorporating the latest trends in healthcare system design, SKA Design is adapting Kaiser’s current branded program to this vision, including incorporating digital signage elements into the exterior as well as interior wayfinding program. Additionally, SKA Design has worked with CO Architects to incorporate the extensive sign program into the BIM modeling, a first for a Kaiser Southern California project.
